The Lena Jones mysteries and the Gunn Zoo mysteries

WHAT:          Monthly Speaker/Dinner Meeting

WHEN:          Wed – MAY 29th, 2019 5:30 pm

_____________________________________________________________________

SPEAKERS 6:45: Betty Webb is the author of 10 Lena Jones mysteries

(DESERT REDEMPTION, DESERT WIVES, etc.) and 5 Gunn Zoo mysteries

(THE OTTER OF DEATH, THE PUFFIN OF DEATH, etc.).

For 20 years Betty was a journalist, interviewing everyone from U.S. presidents, astronauts who walked on the moon, and polygamy runaways. A nationally-syndicated literary critic whose reviews ran on the New York Times wire for more than 30 years, she currently reviews for Mystery Scene Magazine.

Betty is a member of the National Federation of Press Women, Mystery Writers of America, and the Authors Guild. She is also well-known as a creative writing instructor and has taught creative writing at Phoenix College and held Masters’ Classes in Creative Writing at ASU. She is currently the Writer-in-Residence at the Tempe Library.

She will talk about the necessity for a writer to be flexible in today’s ever-changing market. For instance, after having the same editor and the same publisher for 20 years, her publisher just got gobbled up by one of the giants — and Betty with them.  Her writing life will be changing, but at this point, she doesn’t know how.

She might call her talk “The Uncertainty of the Writing Life.”

SPEAKER 6:45: In Betty Webb’s talk, “Living the Writer’s Life,” she discusses the ups and downs of authors who write for a living, whether that be advertising copy, journalism, or novels. For such writers, she says, waiting for “inspiration” is a luxury they can’t afford, because if they don’t write — and sell what they write — they don’t eat. And yet in today’s tightening literary market, sales are becoming more and more iffy. So that’s a lot of pressure. And yet they still write. So why? What is it in the writing profession (besides hunger) that keeps them glued to the keyboard? Betty shares the answer, and the answer may surprise you.

Betty Webb is the author of the nationally best-selling Lena Jones mystery series (DESERT VENGEANCE, etc.) and the humorous Gunn Zoo mysteries (THE OTTER OF DEATH, etc.). 1. Book #1: What I learned NOT to do when self-publishing
  2. Book #2: Self-published and over 6,000 copies sold
  3. Book #3: Finding my voice WANDER WOMAN – just released June 2010

I will share what I’ve learned on my publishing and marketing journey and what I am planning for the future. Come hear lessons learned to help make your journey more enjoyable.

Dr. Marcia Reynolds is currently marketing her new book called Wander Woman, on how today’s strong, restless women can find contentment and direction.  It was just published by Berrett-Koehler in June, 2010.

Marcia is considered an expert on the brain, helping people to understand “why they do what they do.” Excerpts from Marcia’s book, Outsmart Your Brain, have appeared in major publications around the world.

She travels around the world speaking, training and coaching leaders and rising stars in major corporations. Excerpts from her books have appeared in many publications, including Fortune Magazine, Harvard Communications Newsletter, Cosmopolitan, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, and she has appeared on ABC World News and National Public Radio.

In addition to her doctorate in organizational psychology, she is also a Master Certified Coach and Certified Speaking Professional.
