ASU’s Smoking Ban is Just and Protects the Innocent – MY TURN AZ Republic Thurs 12/27/2012

December 28, 2012 by Patricia Brooks

MY OPINION FOR THE MY TURN SECTION OF THE PAPER WAS PUBLISHED TODAY – 12/27/2012!

SEE SCOTTSDALE SECTION OF THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC or see my
submission below – thank you for your support and comments.  HAPPY NEW YEAR

PATRICIA

Subject: MY TURN – ASU’S SMOKING BAN one more time – Scottsdale Republic

Is ASU violating our civil liberties?  Of course not.  (My Turn, Marilyn June Jansen, 12/12/2012)  Ms. Jansen is correct in her My Turn about the decision by ASU to protect the students and
the public from both smoking and second hand smoke.  I support her view on their taking this necessary drastic measure.  She is also correct with her information on the statutes and the law.  Where she failed is in the crux of the situation.

What she did not point out is that 175,000 plus people die each year of lung cancer in this country and most of that is due to smoking.  Roughly 75,000 of that number is women – or close to twice that of the 40,000 that die of breast cancer.  Most do not know that because
breasts are prettier than lungs and marketing sells.

Ms. Jansen was remiss in her not mentioning lung cancer at all – but then lung cancer is not pretty it is scary. With about a 10% survival rate in many cases, lung cancer is usually deadly.  It is the least funded of the major cancers.  Very little marketing is put on lung cancer – no
walks, no big fundraiser events and certainly no celebrity spokesperson.

I know this because my sister died 14 years ago of lung cancer and the statistics are about the same today.  Yes, she was a smoker – and had quit for 12 years before her diagnosis.  She smoked in high school and college because it was glamorous, and after that because it was an
addiction.  She told me it was harder to quit smoking than to quit drinking – she eventually did both when she began raising children.  They were young teenage boys when she died.

We are not turning into a police state here in Arizona when it comes to ASU and the smoking ban.  This is a serious and right decision.  I was adjunct faculty for many years at ASU and witnessed firsthand the amount of smoking done by students – especially with beautiful
young women.  It was heartbreaking.  Most of the marketing for cigarettes is directed to young women – some of the most vulnerable in our society.

This ban is the right thing to do.  It is to protect the young and the innocent – even if they are of legal age.  And a college or university has the right make their campus a safe environment for all of us – student, visitor and faculty.  Second hand smoke kills too.  At least 20% of those who die of lung cancer never smoked according to the American Lung Association.  I support the ASU smoking ban in support of my sister’s memory.

Launches FREE EBOOK to Celebrate Sister’s Birthday Jan 14-16!
Gifts of Sisterhood – the gifts that keep on giving!

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, January 11, 2012 – To find hope in her
grief and to celebrate her sister’s life is God’s plan for this author. This past
month, Scottsdale author Patricia L. Brooks www.amazon.com/author/patricialbrooks
as Brooks Goldmann Publishing Company, LLC of Scottsdale, AZ enhanced her book Gifts of Sisterhood with updates in an Ebook now available to you
FREE for three days – Jan. 14-16 in celebration of her sister’s birthday.  This new Ebook supports the importance of family relationships and the journey of grief when a loved one is lost. www.amazon.com/giftsofsisterhood.

In today’s firestorm of spiritual doubt, this book is a collection of heartwarming stories that should not be overlooked.   Brooks gathered the stories from true
accounts of her relationship with her sister and their growing up in the upper
peninsula of Michigan.  They experienced the unusual, the synchronistic, the amazing.

She tells them in her own words with her sister’s permission.  Each one is a small miracle, often a life-changing experience that will touch your heart.

In addition to reducing the mystery of life, death and grief in her book, Gifts of Sisterhood, Brooks asserts life’s challenges occur all the time and change our lives forever; many times for the better.

Brooks, who represents not only her writing but her spirituality here, serves the community in many ways.  She teaches and works within natural
approaches to the grief journey and offers her workshop outline in this revised
Ebook.  Readers who sample this beautiful Ebook will become open to the possibility of achieving greater well-being and peace with life’s many challenges.  Her Stop Smoking Sister campaign is introduced as well.

We give and receive gifts, but the gifts that keep on giving – Faith, Courage, Love, Friendship, Happiness and Acceptance – are the gifts her youngest sister gave so freely.  Too often it takes a life changing experience to recognize what we already have, affirm what we already know, welcome what is given to us and share it with others.

Patricia is a “sibling survivor” of the #2 killer of women today.  While rejoicing in her sister’s memory she preserves her story and important legacy.  Through emotional healing Patricia takes you on a journey of love and friendship, grief and acceptance as she gives her sister’s spirit back to their “roots” in County Tipperary, Ireland.

You will learn to awaken the compassion within you, forgive yourself when facing life’s challenges, find the hidden gift of hope in your life and have faith that nothing happens in God’s world by mistake.

Patricia reveals her upbeat and insightful personal story of the relationship she had with her youngest sister – her friend, her confidante, her soul mate.  Their lives constantly intertwined, both growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and living 2,500 miles apart as adults.

Now God takes you on the Journey from Grief to Gratitude to a place of inspiration and acceptance.  The faith Patricia has her sister’s life was not in vain calls her to share her gifts with you.  By embracing her sister’s wit,
charm and beauty she weaves together a meaningful story of love and courage you can reflect upon as you travel your own life’s path.

A portion of the proceeds of this book goes to the Vital Care Hospice of the Straits of Mackinac County Michigan in memory of my sister. Thank you.

MEMORABLE MEMOIRS and you

October 31, 2008 by Patricia Brooks

Good Morning!

Memoir writing is personal and intimate.  It is for you first.  It can be for family, for friends, to heal, to leave a legacy or to tell a story, to educate, to inform, but many times to serve a unique purpose.  Here are ideas I use in my workshop – Memorable Memoirs.  They should be helpful to you.  These bits work for me and were accumulated from various sources that I deem reliable.

My first memoir – Gifts of Sisterhood – was to honor my sister and celebrate her life that impacted me with gifts for a lifetime.  Little did we know the book would take on a life of its own and the workshop Journey from Grief to Gratitude.  It was first to take us through the grieving process after she passed away from lung cancer, and later to carry our mission:  Share her courage and wit through her many gifts.

The ultimate goal was to bring attention to lung cancer and the 70,000 women who die from the disease each year, thus the Stop Smoking Sister campaign was born.  Your journey will be different.  Mine took me home to Ireland and a chance to write about it in my last chapter, about taking my sister’s spirit with me to County Tipperary.  Yours will be the same in many ways, and unique to you.

Best of luck to you as you prepare to launch your Memorable Memoir.  Take what works for you and let me know your questions or comments – we will work together.  I am at the third revision stage of my second memoir – this one on my two-times experiencing violent crime and now thriving after the journey through PTSD.  SEE handout below – HAPPY WRITING!
