SPEAKER 6:45: In Betty Webb’s talk, “Living the Writer’s Life,” she discusses the ups and downs of authors who write for a living, whether that be advertising copy, journalism, or novels. For such writers, she says, waiting for “inspiration” is a luxury they can’t afford, because if they don’t write — and sell what they write — they don’t eat. And yet in today’s tightening literary market, sales are becoming more and more iffy. So that’s a lot of pressure. And yet they still write. So why? What is it in the writing profession (besides hunger) that keeps them glued to the keyboard? Betty shares the answer, and the answer may surprise you.

Betty Webb is the author of the nationally best-selling Lena Jones mystery series (DESERT VENGEANCE, etc.) and the humorous Gunn Zoo mysteries (THE OTTER OF DEATH, etc.). Before beginning to write full time, Betty worked as a journalist, interviewing everyone from U.S. presidents, astronauts who walked on the moon, Nobel Prize-winners, and polygamy runaways. She has taught creative writing classes and workshops at Arizona State University and Phoenix College and has been a nationally-syndicated literary critic for more than 20 years and is currently reviewing for Mystery Scene Magazine.

Scottsdale Society of Women Writers welcomes Nancy Safford

November 28, 2017 by pbrooks

SCOTTSDALE SOCIETY OF WOMEN WRITERS

Welcomes Nancy Safford, Author, Photojournalist
and Tour Guide (US and France)

*Special Date due to the Holidays

WHAT: Monthly Speaker/Dinner Meeting

WHEN: *SPECIAL DATE: WED December 13th, 2017 5:30 -7:30 pm*

WHERE: Starfire Golf Club – see new PAYPAL info below*

WHY: Mission: The Scottsdale Society of Women Writers gives members access to events of interest, a format for exchanging ideas, an opportunity to network with other women writers and authors, an alliance with professionals relating to writing, publishing, and marketing of books, and camaraderie and support.

SPEAKER 6:45 Nancy Safford, author, photojournalist and tour guide
Nancy Safford’s career began as a photographer, a photojournalist 25 years ago. She was fascinated with other people’s stories and published her first book as a young photographer in her mid-twenties. She had many photo shows, did magazine stories and has in fact photographed for two more books to be published.
While working for a magazine in upstate New York, she formed her own non-profit research institute and trained teachers to work together using the Nobel Prize winning physics concept holography. She then curated a popular show at the New York State Museum called, “Holography in The Classroom”.
One day she was called to the southwest, to Sedona, Arizona and let go of everything she had been doing. Her new book, A Magdalene Awakens. Hidden Temple Secrets, published in March 2017, talks about this story.
She will discuss her journey to uncover her lost truth, her deepest self, in a place far beyond what she had imagined possible.
Nancy became a spiritual guide in Sedona and invited people to explore the famous red rock vortices of Sedona, where they could be changed by the energies of each special place. She began facilitating women’s circles as an ordained Priestess of the Mary Magdalene Mysteries and then began guiding people on pilgrimages to sacred sites in southern France as a bilingual guide.
She began to explore legacies and wisdom teachings that stretched back to the ancient goddess and priestess cultures from long ago when she facilitated these journeys to southern France, exploring the Magdalene legacies present there. These visions included something that had been hidden there long ago, left near the famous village of Rennes Le Chateau. This tiny village had gained worldwide attention after the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, came out in 1982 and again after The DaVinci Code was published in 2004.

Speaker Bio:
Cherie Lee, author and writing workshop expert

After earning an AA degree from Glendale Community College, Cherie Lee started her
writing career with non-fiction works for the college newspaper, then for Sun
Life magazine. Curiosity guides her tall tales. Her fictional stories take her
to interesting places leaving little time for household chores or yard work.
Currently she is editing two completed children stories while waiting for
results from contests for her adult short stories.

Workshop Talk:

Every writing life starts with an idea or with a curious interest why something
happened in your personal life or in history. Mine come like weeds. When I know
that idea won’t work for me, I use it for a blog for readers to use as an
exercise or a story. Entering contests stretches writing abilities and ensures
deadlines are met. I love doing them. A short mini workshop for planning a
character or a story idea will be based on an umbrella. Contact info: cherie6124@aol.com

My book is a book of beginning scenes for teachers and writers to utilize for
writing exercises, story starters, overcoming writer’s block, or journal
writing or bell work at the start of a class. Each teaser is followed by a
series of questions to spark a writer’s imagination. The one hundred and thirty
examples are divided into six major categories for characters, settings and
descriptions, plot, dialogue, and exercises. However, each story teaser can be
used by itself at any time if it appeals to the writer. There is a writer’s
resource listing at the end of the book.

YouTube trailer for The Fall from Paradise Valley

Presentation – FIFTY SHADES OF HOT – As the title of Virginia Nosky’s workshop suggests, the intensity of love and sex scenes is all over the map. The writer’s audience expects a certain amount of heat, from mild to blazing hot and many degrees in between. She delves into the biology and games of the man/woman attraction and its escalation, and looks at directions the
writer can go to satisfy the reader’s expectations and, not to forget, those of the characters in the story. Nosky also stresses that writing sweetly-warm to volcanic-hot romantic scenes is as much fun for the writer as it is for the reader and the characters involved in those Fifty Shades of Heat.
