6:45 speaker – STELLA POPE DUARTE, award-winning author, educator and community activist

Acclaimed author, Stella Pope Duarte, is described by reviewers as a “magical weaver with a sure hand and a pure heart,” and as an author who “will enlarge humanity.” Her literary awards include a 2009 American Book Award, a Pulitzer Prize nomination and a Book Sense 76 Selection. She believes that writing, like love, begins within, or it doesn’t start at all.

Embracing someone else’s life is one of the most challenging things a writer can do. Biographical writing is precise and goal oriented, yet soul-searching and rich with anecdotes and stories that reveal the layers of another’s life. Weaving thousands of elements together to get at the heart of a story is a daunting task, but there is an internal road map to follow, and the light at the end of the tunnel comes through trusting yourself from first page to last.

SPEAKER/Presentation:  Like you, time management expert, podcaster and best-selling author, Nicole Bandes, wanted more time in her day to do the things that mattered.  Was it lack of focus?  Procrastination? Or just bad systems? Nicole spent years working out how to suck out just one more hour to spend with her family, build her business or work on her books. She had tried just about every time management tool out there before she finally put her degree in Psychology to work and uncovered what was missing from all those programs. Now Nicole uses her unique program to help 1000’s overcome their time management issues. Nicole’s are radically different from your typical time management ideas because she makes a point to focus on both the outer tools and skills AND the inner mindset. Having lost a son at the young age of 17, Nicole knows how precious our time is and she is on a mission to help make more time for what matters most.

Banish Super Busy Bonkers so You Can Write More

Why does it seem like some writers have all the time in the world while others struggle to get in a few precious minutes a day? It isn’t because they are better organized OR have more time than the rest of us. There’s a secret to mastering effective time management so you have more time to write. Most writers don’t know the secret and that’s why they continue to be overwhelmed and exhausted and never get their book finished.  You’ve been conditioned to believe that time management just requires a better schedule, a slicker app or a smarter set of habits.  Unfortunately, when these things don’t work, you get frustrated on top of the ever increasing overwhelm. This secret is the one thing that will make all the difference in your time management so that you can get out of the busyness of your business. Without it, though, there isn’t a schedule or an app in the world that will help you to overcome your time management challenges.

SPEAKER:  Barbara McNichol – Tighten Your Writing and Other Self-Editing Techniques   You enjoy the creative process of writing and telling poignant stories. You think you’ve “nailed it” beautifully—until you sit down and reread your latest draft. Not so great after all. It’s now time to polish it until it shines.

But when it comes to perfecting your own writing, do you know what to look for? Think like an editor and revise your own work just as a pro would do.

In this skill-building session, expert editor Barbara McNichol shows how to improve EVERYTHING you write—from emails to blog posts to book chapters. You’ll apply proven writing/editing techniques to help you:

  • Tighten and brighten your writing
  • Proofread and punctuate with fresh eyes
  • Avoid choosing the wrong words and blemishing your reputation.

Come to this fun, interactive session to capture practical skills you’ll use forever.

Barbara McNichol’s passion is helping people write clearly, concisely, and correctly. She shows how to say what you want to convey with confidence. How? Through Wordshops that help participants write effective emails, whack wordiness, and match words with their correct meanings. This editor of 300+ nonfiction books has created a word choice guide called Word Trippers and puts out two ezines: “Word Tripper of the Week” and “Add Power to Your Pen.” All point out the little nitty things that will make a big difference in your ability to write well.

SPEAKER  AUTHOR BIO – Vijaya Schartz

Born in France, award-winning author Vijaya Schartz never conformed to anything and could never refuse a challenge. She likes action and exotic settings, in life and on the page. She traveled the world and claims to also travel through time, as she writes without boundaries about the future and the far away past. Her love of cats transpires in most of her books. Find out more about her novels at http://www.vijayaschartz.com/

EDIT IS A FOUR LETTER WORD

Sad but true, a story is only as good as its editing. The best tale can be mired in awkward syntax, poor grammar, superfluous wording, slow pacing, shallow characters, or overused clichés, while a great editor can make even a mediocre story sparkle. Self-editing can be your best opportunity to reach new writing heights. It can make or break your career, whether you seek a publisher, or choose the self-publishing route.

Speaker Bio:
Cherie Lee, author and writing workshop expert

After earning an AA degree from Glendale Community College, Cherie Lee started her
writing career with non-fiction works for the college newspaper, then for Sun
Life magazine. Curiosity guides her tall tales. Her fictional stories take her
to interesting places leaving little time for household chores or yard work.
Currently she is editing two completed children stories while waiting for
results from contests for her adult short stories.

Workshop Talk:

Every writing life starts with an idea or with a curious interest why something
happened in your personal life or in history. Mine come like weeds. When I know
that idea won’t work for me, I use it for a blog for readers to use as an
exercise or a story. Entering contests stretches writing abilities and ensures
deadlines are met. I love doing them. A short mini workshop for planning a
character or a story idea will be based on an umbrella. Contact info: [email protected]

My book is a book of beginning scenes for teachers and writers to utilize for
writing exercises, story starters, overcoming writer’s block, or journal
writing or bell work at the start of a class. Each teaser is followed by a
series of questions to spark a writer’s imagination. The one hundred and thirty
examples are divided into six major categories for characters, settings and
descriptions, plot, dialogue, and exercises. However, each story teaser can be
used by itself at any time if it appeals to the writer. There is a writer’s
resource listing at the end of the book.
