Toward the end of her forty-year career as a creator of science museums, Sheila Grinell turned to fiction. Her debut novel, Appetite, was published in 2016, and a second novel, The Contract, will be released in the fall of 2019. Born in a taxi in Manhattan, she studied at The Bronx High School of Science, Harvard University, and the University of California at Berkeley. She lives in Phoenix with her husband and dog.

Sheila Grinell moved to Phoenix in 1993 to build the Arizona Science Center. She hit the ground running and opened the museum in record time. A dozen years later, in her sixties, she took on a different challenge—to begin a second career as a novelist. What was it like for Sheila to start all over again? How did her two careers compare? And what lessons has she learned about getting word about your book out into the world?

SPEAKER/Presentation:  Like you, time management expert, podcaster and best-selling author, Nicole Bandes, wanted more time in her day to do the things that mattered.  Was it lack of focus?  Procrastination? Or just bad systems? Nicole spent years working out how to suck out just one more hour to spend with her family, build her business or work on her books. She had tried just about every time management tool out there before she finally put her degree in Psychology to work and uncovered what was missing from all those programs. Now Nicole uses her unique program to help 1000’s overcome their time management issues. Nicole’s are radically different from your typical time management ideas because she makes a point to focus on both the outer tools and skills AND the inner mindset. Having lost a son at the young age of 17, Nicole knows how precious our time is and she is on a mission to help make more time for what matters most.

Banish Super Busy Bonkers so You Can Write More

Why does it seem like some writers have all the time in the world while others struggle to get in a few precious minutes a day? It isn’t because they are better organized OR have more time than the rest of us. There’s a secret to mastering effective time management so you have more time to write. Most writers don’t know the secret and that’s why they continue to be overwhelmed and exhausted and never get their book finished.  You’ve been conditioned to believe that time management just requires a better schedule, a slicker app or a smarter set of habits.  Unfortunately, when these things don’t work, you get frustrated on top of the ever increasing overwhelm. This secret is the one thing that will make all the difference in your time management so that you can get out of the busyness of your business. Without it, though, there isn’t a schedule or an app in the world that will help you to overcome your time management challenges.

SPEAKER/presentation:  The “writing conversation” is at once robust and foggy, whether it manifests online or in conference rooms, bars or wherever writers gather.  They debate process, they compare premises, they swap tips and offer recommendations, and yet very seldom does the noise seem to coalesce into undebatable principles and immediately applicable practices.  And yet those do exist, residing among and above all this noise, awaiting discovery by writers who are tired of decades of trial and error and rejection.  Larry Brooks talks about it all, cutting through the noise in the process.

Larry Brooks is the author of two bestselling writing books: “Story Engineering,” and “Story Physics.”  His new writing book – “Story Fix: Transform Your Manuscript from Broken to Brilliant in Just One Draft” will be published in September 2015 by Writers Digest Books. Brooks is the USA Today bestselling author of six thrillers.  He teaches at workshops and conferences nationally and internationally, and coaches writers through his website, www.storyfix.com.
